Holy Church of the Holy Mother of God in Kaligata
It is an 18th century building, with a remarkable wood-carved chancel and icons of exquisite artwork. The Virgin Mary’s festive icon is miraculous and it’s name is taken after the Kalligarea Gate of Constantinople, where the original icon was hung.
The silver-sculpted Worshiping Throne of the Virgin Mary Vrefokratousa is of particular interest as it’s decorated with scenes from the life of the Mother of God and the Christ.
Also, the stone-carved architectural expressions, with the remarkable reddish and the two-headed eagle, the imposing spire, the chancel of exquisite artwork dating back to 1804, all underline the style of the stone and wood artist who worked on the church.
