Church of Theotokos at Domata

This fine church has an exceptional gilded iconostasis made in 1839, with icons in the Russian Orthodox style.

It’s most notable relic is the casket of Patriarch Gregory V, who was hanged by the Turks at the entrance of the Patriarchate during Easter Sunday on April 10th 1821. A Kefalonian captain named Nikolas Sklavos found his corpse floating in the waters of the Bosporus and carried it to Odessos for burial. The casket was given to him as a blessing and later dedicated to the Church of the Holy Virgin.

The church celebrates on November 21st (feast day of the Virgin) and April 10th (feast day of St Gregory V).
